It’s been a while since I last posted any updates on this blog. I believe, it’s almost 3 years since I last wrote anything on this site. Here’s a short rant from me.

In my past blog posts I’ve been sharing how you can, with a few simple steps, you can easily block ads on your wifi network. This technique however requires that you find a running adblock DNS server that you can use.
In this post, I show you how you can set up your own caching Adblock DNS server.

Fedora 26 Boot and Suspend Speed Test
Fedora 26 Final has just been released! Woot! Woot!
In preparation for an actual distro review of Fedora 26, I have decided to look at the boot times and suspend times of this distro.
Tweaking Fedora 26 Beta on the Acer Switch Alpha 12
Update: I had to rename this post to tweaking Fedora 26, instead of Running Fedora 26. There is too much to cover in terms of post-installation tweaks alone, that it warrants its own post. I’ll cover actual usage and review in another post.
Fedora 26 has just released Beta recently. I have recently done a post on how installation works on this device. You can check that out. Quick version, I made some choices, and it went well. Awesome!
For this review, I’m going to walk through a few extra steps to get this working on my laptop correctly.
Installing Fedora 26 Beta on the Acer Switch Alpha 12
Fedora 26 has just reached Beta stage, and the Fedora team has made a Beta release, about a week ago. Fedora Linux distro has an ‘almost’ regular release cycle of every 6 months, and every release usually comes with a newer Gnome Shell version, a newer Libreoffice suite, bumped up packages, and improvements all around.
I have always been a fan of the Gnome Shell desktop environment. I think it looks good, and fits well with my usage behavior. I have also found it to be ideal to use Fedora Linux because Fedora defaults to ship with Gnome in a pretty usable and stable package, and usually has a pretty updated version of it. With a regular release cycle, I feel like it is important to keep updated with the latest version of Fedora, to get the best of what Fedora and Gnome has to offer.
This recent Fedora release provides me with an opportunity to do a review of this new release, while waiting for the full release. I will cover some of the installation, and general usability.
Shit happens, updates and such
Well, I’m going to rant for a while. Here’s a list of random updates / rants from me.
Korora 25 properly set up on the Switch Alpha 12
Soon after I got my hands on the Acer Switch Alpha 12, I decided to put Linux on there. Being a Fedora fan for quite a while, I chose the new Fedora 25 Beta release which was already available at the time.
Soon after, the full version of Fedora Workstation was released, and I was in the mood for a fresh reinstall. Mind you, everything was still working just fine. I just got bored.
Here’s a walkthrough of me installing Korora 25 on this laptop.
How to enable adblock on your WiFi
UPDATE*
Hi readers. Just to update you guys that the servers listed below died. I did not renew their lease, cause I was trying to save some money. Servers ain’t cheap y’all. I did not know that people were actually using them. My bad.
I might set up new ones, but don’t count on it.
In the meantime, I recommend this one: https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html
UPDATE2*
I set up new dns adblock servers.
- 139.59.219.245
- 139.59.218.207
I can’t guarantee/promise to keep them running forever. But for now, you can just use them.
Settings Overview
As mentioned in previous of this article series, Adblock WiFi works by wiring up your Wifi router to a DNS adblock server. I have set up 2 such servers so you don’t have to. Update: these servers stopped working. My apologies.
dns1.bancuh.com (107.191.107.58)dns2.bancuh.com (192.249.62.155)
These DNS servers act similar to regular name resolvers, such as Google’s, OpenDNS’, or even your ISP’s DNS servers. All that they do, is to resolve domain-names to valid IP addresses.
However, I have also included a blacklist of known ad-servers to them. If you use my DNS Adblock servers instead of Google’s or your ISP’s DNS servers, you effectively block ads.
In this exercise, I’m going to teach you how to apply Adblock to your WiFi router, using my DNS adblock servers. Here’s what you need to change.
Adblock techniques reviewed
Here is a comparison of various Adblocking technique that I’ve tried, and why I think that we need Wifi Adblock.
